It’s been a good week. The people at the new job are nice. The environment is abit quiet though with everyone plugging into their mp3 players the whole day.

I managed to get a chance to work with Barbie from Hungary. I wanted to do something more androgynous but i think she is a lot more feminine than i thought.

End up trying to get a film noir look and converted the shot into a sepia tone. Actually first time doing this to a photo because i think you need to nail the mood to pull it off.

Canon EOS 7D

04Sep09

2 days ago, Canon launched the EOS 7D. A 18 megapixel APS-C sensor DSLR meant for the semi professional and serious enthusiast.

The camera was a lot of first for Canon and the DSLR market.

  • 18 MP APS–C CMOS Sensor
Designed and manufactured by Canon, the sensor produces an outstanding image and offers fantastic performance at high and low conditions, thanks to a new photodiode and microlens construction.
  • 8 fps image capture
Enabled by the Dual “DIGIC 4” processors and improved electrical system, photographers can capture images at 8fps, without the need for additional accessories and in all file types.
  • ISO Range
The EOS 7D enables photographers to capture subjects in their natural light.  The ISO range (100 – 6,400) is expandable to 12,800.
  • EOS Movie
With improved operation, making it easy to switch directly to movie mode, it is now even simpler to shoot Full HD video.  Users can set exposure and frame rate – with options for 24 fps to create that cinematic feel.
  • Dual “DIGIC 4” processors
By utilising Dual “DIGIC 4” processors, users of the EOS 7D never have to compromise between shooting speed, image quality and ISO performance.
  • Impressive Design
Canon has listened to photographer feedback when designing the body, as well as the internal technologies.  A magnesium alloy body offers environmental protection – the tough, lightweight construction is designed to defend against moisture, and dust – equivalent to the legendary EOS–1N.

During extensive development Canon went back to the drawing board, listening to photographers worldwide in order to design the EOS 7D to meet their specific needs.    Commenting on the creation of the EOS 7D, Mr. Shinbori, Deputy Group Executive of Photo Products Group & Senior General Manager of Camera Development Center, Canon Inc,said “We consulted over 5,000 photographers worldwide and asked them what they most wanted to see from a camera.  Matching this insight with cutting-edge technology, we were able to develop a camera that truly gives photographers the versatile tool they require to experiment with their images.”

Its the 7th Lunar Month and it is usually not advisable to hang out late, swim at night or go for holidays. That was also what i told my model, Luane, when we did the shoot.

Also told her not to look back if someone calls out her name at night. Ghosts are not a sexist or racist lot. They don’t mind exchanging soul for soul even if you are not Chinese. :)

After telling her the warnings, she gave me this fantastic shot.

Punked!

18Aug09

Been abit busy lately, going for interviews to find a new job. Will be moving back to publishing and doing what i do best.

An ex colleague working in an automotive magazine contacted me lately and is liasing with me to shoot some editorial for their next issue. It is going to be their 80th anniversary issue so he wants to try something different from what they have been doing.

Have not been shooting alot lately. Instead i spent time trying to define myself in terms of photography.

I have been talking to friends and working on some collaborations with local street wear designers. September will be a very busy month for me with 2 weddings and 3 spreads to do.

I just did a shoot with Dawn. Very chatty girl. Have noticed her since last year but never thought of working with her till recently. Kept running into her at events.

Worked with Corene to get a lolita punk look for this shoot. Spent about 2 hours trying to get the make up to look right.

UWA

10Aug09

Otherwise known as ultra wide angle. Refers to lenses used in cameras that have a focal length of 24mm and less. Most commonly used to shoot landscapes.

Due to distortion in the picture taken with uwa lenses, special lenses were developed for shooting architecture to prevent perspective skewing.

They are called tilt shift lenses which uses the Scheimpflug principle which is a geometric rule that describes the orientation of the plane of focus of an optical system (such as a camera) when the lens plane is not parallel to the image plane. It is commonly applied to the use of camera movements on a view camera. It is also the principle used in corneal pachymetry, the mapping of corneal topography, done prior to refractive eye surgery such as LASIK, and used for early detection of glaucoma. The principle is named after Austrian army Captain Theodor Scheimpflug, who used it in devising a systematic method and apparatus for correcting perspective distortion in aerial photographs.

Now to reward you for reading that, a little light hearted tvc.

Downtime

04Aug09

Finally some peace after the weekend long event coverage of the SIJS 2009. Did not shoot all the runway shows because they were repetitions of the first day’s opening show. Need to burn them into a cd for Bernice later though.

Did not find a suitable aka cheap solution to mounting my hot light onto a light stand. Will probably be forced to get a overpriced alternative if i need to use it for shooting. In the meantime, i am still searching for a female to female socket. Sounds kinky.

Finally got round to uploading the 2nd shoot i did with Marisa and met her again at SIJS because she was distributing samples at the VIP lounge.

Frenzy

29Jul09

This few days will be quite hectic for me. I just agreed to be a L’Oréal event photographer and will be going down later to get a briefing for a function on Friday. Hopefully i get more out of just shooting photos for this stint.

I will also be helping out my friend, Bernice, to cover the Singapore International Jewellery Show 2009.  She was kind enough to get me registered as a official photographer but i actually forgot to ask her where is it going to be held. For those who have no plans this weekend, it will be at Suntec City.

So this weekend i will be pretty busy. I also bought a tungsten lamp for my shooting.

I love the light that comes out from a hot light. It can look so sensual and soft. But i need to do some modifications to get it mounted on my light stand first. A trip to Peninsula is in order. Might need to get some blue gels to balance the light to daylight as well.

Erokawa

27Jul09

The term Erokawa was coined to describe the style of photography that combines eroticism with the kawaii style of photography favored and pioneered by the Japanese.

As a follow up from the video posted earlier, i attempted something as well.

Jasmine was a breeze to work with. Cracked many jokes about riding and horses. :)

She’s sweet, cute, voluptuous and Jap. What more can a guy ask for?

But other than ogling at her for 5 mins, its good to pick up some ideas on lighting and location styling from other people.

I am sure everyone have seen this ad by now. We were only shown this ad in Singapore recently though and i thought it was hilarious.
